Step up to The Gherkin Challenge for the NSPCC!

The NSPCC is calling on fitness fanatics and novices alike to take fundraising to new heights this year by taking on The Gherkin Challenge and climbing 38 floors to the top of the Gherkin, one of London’s most iconic skyscrapers.

Taking place on Sunday 6 September, this unique challenge offers a rare opportunity to enjoy stunning panoramic views of the capital from the exclusive Searcy’s bar – normally only accessible to private members – whilst raising money to support the NSPCC’s work preventing abuse from ruining childhoods.

And if that’s not enough, there will be a complimentary massage and glass of champagne (or juice) waiting at the top for all ’Gherkineers’.

Whilst the fastest time to the top last year was an impressive 5 minutes 14 seconds (we’ve probably waited longer for the lift to our offices on the fourth floor!), it takes an average of 11 minutes to complete the challenge, during which time 26 children will have contacted the NSPCC’s ChildLine service. By taking part in The Gherkin Challenge, participants could help the charity’s trained counsellors answer more calls and respond to more online messages, ensuring they’re there for children whatever their worry, whenever they need help.

NSPCC Head of Participation Events, Victoria Kellaway, said: “The Gherkin Challenge is a truly unique experience. Whether you choose to walk or run as part of a team or on your own, every step means we can help more children recover from abuse and find ways to prevent it from happening in the first place.

“Tower running continues to increase in popularity, so whether you’re looking to beat a personal best or climb at a leisurely pace, we’re encouraging anyone who is looking for a fun challenge to have a go and join our fight for every childhood.”

The entry fee for The Gherkin Challenge is just £20 per person or £70 for a team of four with a sponsorship target of £200 per person, which could help answer 50 calls to ChildLine. Alternatively, if you don’t fancy taking the stairs, there is the option to purchase a ‘Champagne Lift Pass’ (this sounds like something we could manage!..) for £60 or £100 for two.
