Apr 2011: Six arrested in biggest bogus charity raid

Six members of the gang arrested last October when police raided a yard containing over half a million pounds worth of stolen clothing donations were re-arrested and charged with multiple counts of theft, last week.

Bags intended for the NSPCC, Salvation Army and Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance were discovered among the bags mostly intended for Second Life.

The gang were arrested after the Metropolitan Police tracked a lorry from Ferry Lane to Dover which contained stolen donations.

Second Life was caught collecting in Ireland with a false charity number four years ago and collects illegally without a licence across the UK.

Clothes Aid estimates that around 15% of all bags left for genuine charities are stolen every year, to be sold on the black market to Eastern European and African countries where there is a huge demand for western high-street fashion.
