May 2011: From rags to bones: Spring clean your wardrobe and help Battersea

Rag and bone takes on a whole new meaning as Battersea Dogs & Cats Home calls for donations of unwanted clothing to provide bones, food, and much more for the dogs and cats in its care. If you live in the south of England you may soon be receiving a Battersea-branded collection sack through your door.

It costs Battersea over £10 million a year to care for all the dogs and cats that come into the Home, with the charity ensuring that each and every animal receives the highest quality of veterinary and behavioural treatment and assistance to help it find a new start with the perfect family.

The Home receives no government funding so is entirely reliant on donations from the public. Donating old clothes and accessories is just one way in which people can help. With the summer months ahead and warmer weather on its way, the charity hopes its call for donations will inspire many people to clear out their wardrobe and take a fresh look at the clothes they really need.

Liz Tait, Director of Fundraising at Battersea says:“This is a great opportunity to give your clothes a second chance, whilst also giving many of Battersea’s dogs and cats a second chance in life. If you’re clearing space in your wardrobe for the latest fashions, or finally giving up those items you’ve not worn in years, we would urge you to donate your unwanted clothing to Battersea. Not only will you be helping the environment by finding a new home for your clothes, you’ll also be supporting a very good cause.”

Clothes Aid will be distributing collection sacks to homes in the South and will be making the door-to-door collections for Battersea Dogs & Cats Home. Michael Lomotey, Business Manager at Clothes Aid said: “Clothes Aid is excited to launch the new fundraising partnership with Battersea Dogs & Cats Home and is aiming to raise at least £50,000 in our first year of collecting. But forget your old rags - Clothes Aid needs householders to give good quality clothes that can be re-worn so we can raise as much money as possible for Battersea.”

Clothes Aid has been collecting clothes for charities since 1996 but until now has not worked with an animal charity so is thrilled to be working with Battersea.
