Aug 2010: BBC secret filming exposes bogus collector

A bogus charity claiming to be collecting for Breakthrough Breast Cancer was caught by BBC South East after Clothes Aid helped discover the gang stealing in Kent.

The leaflets used by the bogus collectors show the breast cancer pink ribbon logo and claim to be collecting on behalf of Breakthrough.

Clothes Aid assisted BBC Home Affairs correspondant Colin Campbell with intelligence to help catch the bogus collectors red-handed taking donations intended for the NSPCC and other genuine charities.

Michael Lomotey, Business Manager at Clothes Aid, said: "Our fears are that fraudsters are depriving genuine charities across the UK of up to £14m a year."

Clothes Aid believe that bogus charities use these fraudulant leaflets as an excuse to be on the streets so they can steal genuine charity bags.

"But thanks to our hard work with the BBC South East team we've managed to ensure one less bogus is stealing on our streets."
